What is Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy fertility treatment is a medical procedure used both for diagnostic and treatment purposes in the field of infertility. It involves examining the inside of the uterus (the womb) to identify and potentially address any abnormalities that may be contributing to a woman's difficulty in conceiving or experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss.

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy: During a diagnostic hysteroscopy, a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. The hysteroscope allows the doctor to visualize the uterine cavity directly. This procedure is typically done to investigate the following infertility-related issues:

  1. Uterine Polyps: Small, benign growths on the inner lining of the uterus.
  2. Uterine Fibroids: Non-cancerous growths in the uterine wall.
  3. Uterine Adhesions or Scarring: Bands of tissue that may form inside the uterus, which can lead to fertility problems.
  4. Uterine Septum: A wall-like structure dividing the uterine cavity, potentially affecting implantation or embryo development.
  5. Abnormal Uterine Shape: Certain congenital abnormalities of the uterus that might impede pregnancy.
  6. Endometrial Thickness and Appearance: To assess the lining of the uterus (endometrium) for any irregularities.

Treatment Hysteroscopy: In some cases, if any abnormality is detected during the diagnostic hysteroscopy, the doctor can also perform minor surgical procedures to correct these issues. For example:

  1. Polypectomy: Removal of uterine polyps.
  2. Myomectomy: Removal of uterine fibroids that are affecting fertility.
  3. Adhesion Lysis: Breaking up uterine adhesions or scar tissue.
  4. Resection of Uterine Septum: Removing the wall-like structure if present.
  5. Correcting other Uterine Anomalies: Surgical interventions to improve the shape of the uterus.

Hysteroscopy is generally considered a safe and effective procedure with minimal risks, and it is often performed as an outpatient procedure. Recovery time is usually short, allowing women to resume normal activities within a few days.

It's important to note that hysteroscopy is just one of many diagnostic and treatment options for infertility. The appropriateness of this procedure and other infertility treatments will depend on the specific underlying causes of a couple's fertility issues. If you or someone you know is facing infertility concerns, it's best to consult with a qualified healthcare professional or a reproductive endocrinologist who can provide personalized advice and guidance based on individual circumstances.
